Uganda sits right on the equator, which means it has no real summer or winter — instead the year is shaped by rain. Temperatures stay pleasant and fairly constant all year, so the question is not "will it be hot or cold?" but "how wet will it be, and how does that affect what I want to do?" Here is how the seasons work and when to come for the experience you are after.
The short answer
The most popular times to visit Uganda are the two dry seasons: June to September and December to February. These months bring easier roads, better wildlife viewing and drier forest trails for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking. That said, Uganda is a year-round destination, and the "green seasons" have real advantages of their own.
Uganda's seasons month by month
December to February — dry season. Warm, bright days and the lowest rainfall of the year. Excellent for safaris in the savanna parks and for trekking. This is peak season around the festive period, so book gorilla permits and lodges well ahead.
March to May — the long rains. The wettest stretch, with afternoon downpours and greener, lusher landscapes. Fewer visitors, lower prices and superb birding. Forest trails are muddier and some remote roads get tricky, but a good rain jacket and flexible plans make this a rewarding time to travel.
June to September — dry season. The classic window for a Uganda trip. Reliable weather, thinner vegetation that makes animals easier to spot, and firm trekking trails. It is the busiest season, so early booking pays off.
October to November — the short rains. Shorter, more scattered showers than the long rains, often clearing to bright afternoons. A quieter, cheaper shoulder season that many experienced travellers quietly prefer.
Best time for specific activities
Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking: possible all year, but the drier months (June–September, December–February) mean less mud and easier hiking in Bwindi and Kibale. Permits are limited and sell out for peak dates — reserve early. See our gorilla trekking guide for the full picture.
Wildlife safaris: the dry seasons concentrate animals around water and thin out the bush, giving the best sightings in parks such as Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls.
Birdwatching: superb year-round, but November to April adds migratory species. The shoebill at Mabamba near Entebbe can be seen in any season.

What the weather is like in Entebbe
Because Entebbe sits on the shore of Lake Victoria, it enjoys a mild, breezy microclimate. Daytime temperatures hover around 25–28°C most of the year, cooling pleasantly at night. The lake generates its own showers, so a brief downpour can arrive even in a "dry" month — usually passing quickly and leaving everything fresh and green. It rarely feels oppressively hot, which is one reason the town has always been a relaxed base for travellers.
What to pack
Think layers and practicality rather than heavy-weather gear. Lightweight, breathable clothing in neutral colours works for safaris and city days alike. Bring a warm layer for cool evenings and early-morning game drives, a light waterproof jacket for any season, sturdy closed shoes for trekking, a hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen — the equatorial sun is strong even through cloud. Add insect repellent, any personal medication, a reusable water bottle and a universal adaptor (Uganda uses UK-style three-pin plugs at 240V). If you plan to trek, garden gloves and gaiters are genuinely useful.
So when should you go?
If you want the surest weather and prime wildlife viewing, aim for June–September or December–February and book early. If you would rather trade a little rain for lush scenery, lower prices and quiet trails, the green seasons are wonderful. Whichever you choose, Uganda's equatorial climate means you will never be far from a warm, comfortable day.
